Twitter is reportedly deleting inactive accounts, which means you might be able to grab that username you've always wanted.
The social networking website's inactive account policy states that profiles may be permanently removed due to inactivity. The Verge reports that Twitter has started sending out reminder emails to users who have seemingly disappeared from the platform for extended periods of time.
Twitter is telling users who haven't been online in more than six months to sign in by Dec. 11, or else their usernames are up for grabs again.
"As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter," a spokesperson told The Verge.
Until now, Twitter has seemingly allowed inactive accounts to hold on to usernames for years without being removed from the platform, though Twitter says you may not be able to tell whether an account is currently inactive because not all signs of account activity are publicly visible.
That means users may retain usernames by simply logging in. They don't have to actively tweet or like anything.
Cleaning up the platform means that deceased users, whose profiles may hold sentimental value, may have their pages deactivated. Loved ones who don't know the dead person's password may not be able to hold on to those memories because Twitter doesn't memorialize accounts while its rival Facebook does.
